About NARIT

NARIT is a leading organization in Thailand and South-East Asia based in Chiang Mai. In particular, NARIT manages the Thai National Observatory at a 2,457m site on Doi Inthanon, with a new 2.4-meter telescope which is the largest one in South East Asia. NARIT also comprises an optical laboratory which includes all the essential equipment to perform cutting edge research in optics.

The workshop

The concept of the proposed workshop is to initiate to the optical design methods related to imaging instruments. The participants will learn the methods to design an optical instrument and how to use the ZEMAX software. The workshop will be addressed to advanced students (PhD students, and MSc students), industrial and researchers. After the workshop the participants will be able to design simple  optical instruments for imaging application.

The program will address the following domains:

• Definition of an optical system.

• Optical aberrations and image quality criteria.

• Optical design : from classical optical systems to TMA with freeform optics.

• Performance budget establishment (sensitivity and tolerancing analyses).

• Practical optical design sessions with ZEMAX software.

The workshop courses will cover a duration equal to 7 days (5 consecutive days from 22-26 July/ 2-day break in the weekend from 27-28 July/ continue the school on 29-30 July) and will comprise both theoretical courses and practical activities with the ZEMAX software. Lectures and tutorials will be held by experienced researchers in optical design. The workshop will be provided at NARIT headquarters located at Chiang Mai, a vibrant and pleasant city in northern Thailand, with many touristic attractions.

The program will also include the following socials events of 1 day (including 1 day attraction with 1 lunch and 1 Dinner)

The total duration will thus be equal to 7 days: 6 days of lectures/tutorials + 1 day of social event. There is no registration fee!
