• MONEY MATTERS

The Thai currency is the baht (THB) and for current exchange rates in other currencies click here http://www.oanda.com/currency/converter/

There are money-changing facilities at Chiangmai Airport and Hotel Area where you can change foreign currency for Thai baht.  Most ATM machines will accept the standard international credit cards.

• SIM Cards

If you need a local sim-card during your stay you can obtain it at Chiang Mai Airport or at many shops in the Maya Shopping Complex which is not far from the venue.  Credit for sim-cards can be purchased at various shops in the Shopping Complex or at the 24-hr Seven-11 convenience store.

• Electricity

Thailand used 220V AC, and the Hotel has 3-pin wall outlets.  If the power leads on your laptop and mobile phone recharger have plugs that will not fit both of these wall outlets, you need an adapter.

• Insurance

There is no travel and medical insurance provided by NARIT. This must be applied by the participants.

• The weather in Chiang Mai in August

Temperature

Average Weather in July in Chiang Mai Thailand

Daily high temperatures are around 31°C, rarely falling below 28°C or exceeding 34°C.

Daily low temperatures are around 24°C, rarely falling below 23°C or exceeding 26°C.

The figure below shows you a compact characterization of the hourly average temperatures for the quarter of the year centered on July. The horizontal axis is the day, the vertical axis is the hour of the day, and the color is the average temperature for that hour and day.

Travelling to Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is located in the far north of Thailand, and is served by an international airport, with direct flights to and from China, Hong Kong, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar and Singapore. From other countries Chiang Mai is reached via Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. Note that Chiang Mai is far from Bangkok: the aeroplane flight from Bangkok to Chiang Mai takes about one hour, while the bus trip is about 10 hours.

Accommodation

There will be no accommodation provided by the organizer. The participants are expected to pay for their travel to Chiang Mai and their accommodation, while NARIT will provide each day two coffee breaks and lunch during the workshop. There are various types of accommodation for your selection nearby the venue within walking distance on the nimmanhaemin road and Huay Kaew road.

Local Travel within Chiang Mai

Here is a plentiful supply of red taxies (which hold up to 10 people each) and tuktuks (which can carry at most 4 people) outside the hotel.  A trip to the Thapae Gate-Loi Kroh Road area, where there are night markets, Buddhist temples, Thai boxing, and many restaurants, massage shops and bars, takes 15-20 minutes and costs about 100-200 baht (total) in a tuktuk and 20 baht per passenger in a red bus.

Organizers

  • Dr Saran Poshyachinda(National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand, Thailand)

  • Prof. Boonrucksar Soonthornthum (National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand, Thailand)

  • Dr Christophe Buisset (National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand, Thailand)

  • Assoc. Pr. Thierry Lepine (Institut d’Optique Graduate School – Laboratoire Hubert Curien, France)

Lecturers

Assoc. Prof. Thierry Lepine:

Thierry Lépine got his diploma of engineering (M. Sc equivalent) in 1986, and his PhD in optics from Institut d'Optique in 1991. He spent a year at Commissariat à l'énergie atomique (CEA), 2 years at Thales Optronique SA, and he is now professor of optics at the Institut d'Optique since 1992. Both for teaching and research, he is involved in theory of optical aberrations, optical systems design and radiometry. He is the author of more than 100 publications, 4 patents, and one book about radiometry. He supervised 14 PhD students so far. He is a member of the program committees of SPIE Optical Systems Design and Japan Optical Society/Optics-photonics, Design and Fabrication. He is also visitor at the national observatory of Thailand since 2014.

Dr Christophe Buisset:

Dr Christophe Buisset received the degree of optical engineering from the Institut d’Optique Graduate School (Orsay and Saint-Etienne, France) in 2004 and his PhD in Science of the Universe in 2007 from the Université Nice Sophia Antipolis (Nice, France). Between 2007 and 2013, we worked as an engineer on the development of space optical instruments at the company Thales Alenia Space (Cannes, France). In particular, between 2009 and 2013 he was the optical architect of the cryogenic camera and of the Fourier Transform Spectrograph of the future satellite Meteosat Third Generation InfraRed Sounder (MTG IRS). Since 2013 he has been working as a researcher at the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT). His work has been dedicated to the development of the NARIT Optical laboratory by initiating and leading some projects in telescope design, coronagraphy and spectroscopy.

The workshop aims at a small number of participants with a limit of 15. The workshop is opened to any country but the priority will be given to the students coming, first from Thailand and then, from ASEAN countries. The participants are expected to pay for their travel to Chiang Mai and their accommodation, while NARIT will provide each day two coffee breaks and lunch during the workshop.

The targeted participants are the following:

• Graduate and final-year undergraduate students in Engineering, physics, Optics, Photonics and related domains.

• PhD students in Engineering, physics, Optics, Photonics and related domains.

• Researchers and Engineers in Engineering, physics, Optics, Photonics and related domains.

Prerequisite :

The minimum knowledge to attend the workshop is : good knowledge of geometrical and physical optics, including: paraxial optics  calculations, theory of diffraction effects and interferences.

A Basic knowledge of 3rd order aberration theory and a knowledge of 1 optical design software (ZEMAX preferred) would be profitable (but not mandatory) to attend the workshop.

Equipment: The attendees must bring 1 PC laptop with Windows, no MAC, no Linux with 1 Wi-Fi connection and 1 “Remote Desktop” application. This, in order to connect to 1 NARIT PC and to have access to the ZEMAX software.

Please contact the organizing committee if you cannot bring such equipment to the workshop:

About NARIT

NARIT is a leading organization in Thailand and South-East Asia based in Chiang Mai. In particular, NARIT manages the Thai National Observatory at a 2,457m site on Doi Inthanon, with a new 2.4-meter telescope which is the largest one in South East Asia. NARIT also comprises an optical laboratory which includes all the essential equipment to perform cutting edge research in optics.

The workshop

The concept of the proposed workshop is to initiate to the optical design methods related to imaging instruments. The participants will learn the methods to design an optical instrument and how to use the ZEMAX software. The workshop will be addressed to advanced students (PhD students, and MSc students), industrial and researchers. After the workshop the participants will be able to design simple  optical instruments for imaging application.

The program will address the following domains:

• Definition of an optical system.

• Optical aberrations and image quality criteria.

• Optical design : from classical optical systems to TMA with freeform optics.

• Performance budget establishment (sensitivity and tolerancing analyses).

• Practical optical design sessions with ZEMAX software.

The workshop courses will cover a duration equal to 7 days (5 consecutive days from 22-26 July/ 2-day break in the weekend from 27-28 July/ continue the school on 29-30 July) and will comprise both theoretical courses and practical activities with the ZEMAX software. Lectures and tutorials will be held by experienced researchers in optical design. The workshop will be provided at NARIT headquarters located at Chiang Mai, a vibrant and pleasant city in northern Thailand, with many touristic attractions.

The program will also include the following socials events of 1 day (including 1 day attraction with 1 lunch and 1 Dinner)

The total duration will thus be equal to 7 days: 6 days of lectures/tutorials + 1 day of social event. There is no registration fee!
