On March 27th, 2021, NARIT hosted the annual “NARIT AstroFest 2021” at Princess Sirindhorn AstroPark in Chiang Mai. Together with the National Science Museum (NSM), the new exhibition zones “Astronomy Insight” and “Northern Science Square” were launched at the event, along with featured activities including “Enjoy Science Careers” and public stargazing later at night.
The event was presided over by Prof. Dr. Anek Laothamatas – Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation and Mr. Charoenrit Sanguansat – Chiang Mai Governor. Among numerous distinguished guests and hosts were Dr. Rawin Rawiwong – President of the National Science Museum (NSM), Mr. Sean K. O’Neill – US Consul General, Chiang Mai, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Peeradet Tongumpai – Chairperson of NARIT Executive Board and Dr. Saran Poshyachinda – NARIT Executive Director.
The program also featured a special talk “Women in Astronomy” – a collaboration between US Embassy Bangkok and NARIT, as a part of the Mission Speakers Program in Commemoration of Women’s History Month. Presentation on “Women of NASA” in celebration of Women’s History Month was delivered by Ms. Vi Jacobs-Nhan, US Consul Chiang Mai, followed by a panel discussion from NARIT women researcher and engineer. This is aimed to create women’s visibility and encourage young females to pursue their dreams, education and careers in science and astronomy.
