ความเป็นมาของหอจดหมายเหตุ
สถาบันวิจัยดาราศาสตร์แห่งชาติ (องค์การมหาชน) (สดร.) จัดตั้งขึ้นเมื่อวันที่ 1 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2552 เป็นองค์กรภายใต้การกำกับดูแลของกระทรวงวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี (วท.) ต่อมามีมติ ครม. เมื่อวันที่ 1 พฤษภาคม 2562 ให้ควบรวมกระทรวงวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี สำนักงานคณะกรรมการการอุดมศึกษา (สกอ.) สำนักงานคณะกรรมการวิจัยแห่งชาติ (วช.) และสำนักงานกองทุนสนับสนุนการวิจัย (สกว.) เข้าไว้ในกระทรวงเดียวกัน เพื่อให้สามารถกำหนดทิศทางด้านการวิจัยและเกิดการบูรณาการการทำงานร่วมกัน โดยใช้ชื่อว่า กระทรวงการอุดมศึกษา วิทยาศาสตร์ วิจัยและนวัตกรรม (อว.)
สถาบันมีวัตถุประสงค์การจัดตั้งเพื่อการวิจัย การบริการวิชาการถ่ายทอดองค์ความรู้และเทคโนโลยีด้านดาราศาสตร์ การสร้างเครือข่ายด้านดาราศาสตร์ทั้งในระดับประเทศและนานาชาติ ที่ผ่านมาสถาบันได้พัฒนาโครงสร้างพื้นฐานทางดาราศาตร์ของที่สำคัญของประเทศไทย ได้แก่ หอดูดาวเฉลิมพระเกียรติ 7 รอบพระชนมพรรษา หอดูดาวภูมิภาคสำหรับประชาชน อุทยานดาราศาสตร์สิรินธร เครือข่ายกล้องโทรทรรศน์ควบคุมระยะไกลอัตโนมัติ หอสังเกตุตการณ์ดาราศาสตร์วิทยุแห่งชาติ และในอนาคตยังจะดำเนินการพัฒนาโครงสร้างพื้นฐานทางดาราศาสตร์เพิ่มเติมอีก อาทิ ห้องปฎิบัติการขั้นสูงด้านดาราศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยีอวกาศ เป็นต้น
การดำเนินการที่ผ่านมามีเอกสารราชการสำคัญที่เกี่ยวข้องกับภารกิจ และการพัฒนาโครงสร้างพื้นฐานทางดาราศาสตร์จำนวนมากที่สมควรอย่างยิ่งที่จะต้องเก็บรักษาและอนุรักษ์ไว้ นอกจากนี้ ยังมีบันทึกเอกสารทางประวัติศาสตร์ วรรณคดี และศิลปกรรมของชาติไทยที่เกี่ยวข้องกับดาราศาสตร์ที่สมควรเก็บรักษาและอนุรักษ์ไว้อีกมากมาย
หอจดหมายเหตุดาราศาสตร์ สถาบันวิจัยดาราศาสตร์แห่งชาติ (NARU : NARIT Archives & Records Unit) จึงถูกจัดตั้งขึ้นเพื่อเป็นหน่วย รวบรวม จัดเก็บ สงวนรักษาอย่างเป็นระบบและให้บริการซึ่ง เอกสาร บันทึกสารสนเทศ บันทึกข้อมูลลงในวัสดุและสื่อที่มีรูปแบบต่าง ๆ ตามพัฒนาการของเทคโนโลยีและยุคสมัยที่เปลี่ยนไป ของสถาบันหรือของบุคคล ที่ได้จัดทำขึ้นหรือรับไว้เพื่อใช้ในการดำเนินงาน กิจกรรมต่าง ๆ ซึ่งสิ้นกระแสตามการปฏิบัติงานของหน่วยงานแล้ว และได้รับการประเมินคุณค่าอย่างถูกต้องแล้วว่า มีความสำคัญ สมควรแก่การเก็บรักษาระยะยาว ไม่ให้สูญหายไปตามกาลเวลา อนุรักษ์ไว้เป็นมรดกทางวัฒนธรรม เป็นข้อมูลทางประวัติศาสตร์ทางดาราศาสตร์ของไทย เพื่อประโยชน์ในการศึกษา ค้นคว้า และวิจัยทางด้านประวัติศาสตร์ดาราศาสตร์ไทยต่อไป

คำย่อ “NARU” คำอ่านออกเสียงภาษาไทยว่า “น่ารู้”
สีน้ำเงิน แสดงถึง สถาบันพระมหากษัตริย์ไทย
สีส้ม แสดงถึง สีประจำวันพระราชสมภพของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว คือ วันพฤหัสบดี
ดาวประจำยาม (สีส้ม) แสดงถึง ลายไทยพื้นฐานรูปสี่เหลี่ยมทแยงมุมมีลักษณะคล้ายดอกไม้สี่กลีบ ซึ่งเปรียบ เสมือนพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 4
ความหมายของสัญลักษณ์
สัญลักษณ์ของจดหมายเหตุดาราศาสตร์ ประกอบด้วย อักษรย่อ “NARU” (NARIT Archives & Records Unit) และ "ดาวประจำยาม" NARU มีอักษรเป็นสีน้ำเงินอันเป็นศิริมงคลด้วยแสดงถึงสถาบันพระมหากษัตริย์ไทย โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง พระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 4 แห่งกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ ทรงพระอัจฉริยภาพทางด้านดาราศาสตร์ และได้รับการยกย่องว่าเป็นบิดาแห่งวิทยาศาสตร์ไทย
โดยตำแหน่งของ “ดาวประจำยาม” อยู่ด้านบนขวาของอักษร N ซึ่งเป็นอักษรย่อของ NARIT แสดงนัยว่า NARIT เป็น North celestial pole คือ ขั้วฟ้าเหนือ ที่เป็นจุดอ้างอิงในการกำหนดวัดตำแหน่งของวัตถุท้องฟ้า สื่อความหมายว่า NARU ทำหน้าที่เป็นหน่วยรวบรวมข้อมูล เป็นแหล่งอ้างอิงทางด้านดาราศาสตร์ที่มีคุณค่า และอนุรักษ์มรดกทางวัฒนธรรมและประวัติศาสตร์ทางด้านดาราศาสตร์ของไทย

Background
National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (public organization) was established on 1 January 2009 which was under supervision of Ministry of Science and Technology (ST). Later the Thai government cabinet has commanded on 1 May 2019 that the Ministry of Science and Technology, Higher education, Research council, and TRF were merged to be a new ministry of Higher Education Science research and Innovation
The objective of establishment of NARIT are to carry out research, teach, train, transfer knowledge and technology related to astronomy, and to create networking at national and international level. In the past several years NARIT has built important infrastructures for Thailand, such as Thailand National observatory, regional observatories for public, AstroPark, Thai Robotic telescope, National Radio Observatories. Furthermore, in the near future, NARIT is going to build more infrastructures, such as advanced Laboratories and space technologies.
From the beginning of the operation of NARIT, there have been many important official documents related to the NARIT’s missions and the infrastructure development for astronomy of Thailand which are needed to be kept and conserved. In addition, there are also documents related to histories, literacies and arts of Thai Nation which is related to astronomy are needed to be kept and conserved.
NARIT Archives & Records Unit (NARU) therefore was established as a unit to run all necessary archives activities systematically, such as 1) collecting, keeping, conserving documents, 2) servicing documents, information and 3) recording documents and information in a variety of media depending on available technologies. These documents must be no longer in the current use in the office but are valuable to be kept in the long term or permanently in archives. These documents will be a cultural heritage of historical information of Thailand’s astronomy for the benefits of further studies or research in astronomical history of Thailand.

Orange is referring to the color of Thursday which is the day of birth of King Rama 4 of Chakri Dynasty
Stars (orange) are referring basic Thai pattern similar to flowers with 4 lobes reflecting to King Rama 4 of Chakri Dynasty
Meaning of LOGO
The logo of NARIT Archives & Records Unit (NARU) is consist of abbreviations “NARU” and traditional Thai drawing stars. The colour of NARU is blue referring to Monarchy, especially the King Rama 4 of Chakri Dynasty who was an expert in astronomy and praised as “Farther of Thai Science”
The positions of stars are on the top of N, implying that NARIT is on the North celestial pole which is the reference point for locating celestial objects. This implies that NARU will act as a center for information collection, a reference for valuable astronomical information and the conservation of cultural heritage and history of astronomy of Thailand.
