IYA2009 - General
With the vision that everyone should realize the impact of astronomy and other fundamental sciences on our daily lives, and understand how scientific knowledge can contribute to a more equitable and peaceful society, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and UNESCO have initiated a global effort which crystallized into “The International Year of Astronomy 2009” Project, better known as IYA2009, under the theme, The Universe, Yours to Discover. IYA2009 also marks the 400th anniversary of the first astronomical observation through a telescope by Galileo Galilei, the Father of Modern Science.

The aim of the project is to help the citizens of the world rediscover their place in the Universe through the day- and night-time sky, and thereby engage a personal sense of wonder and discovery.
The Project has been endorsed by the United Nations and the International Council of Science (ICSU).
The International Year of Astronomy 2009 is supported by eleven Cornerstone projects and twelve Special Projects. These are global programmes of activities centred on specific themes and are some of the projects that will help to achieve IYA2009's main goals.
Throughout the year, IYA2009 activities will take place at the global and regional levels, and especially at the national and local levels. National Nodes have been formed in each country to prepare activities for 2009. These nodes will establish collaborations between professional and amateur astronomers, science centres, educators and science communicators in preparing activities for 2009.
