Astronomy Diplomacy rules as British Ambassador embraces ISAC team

HE. Mr. Mark Kent, British Ambassador welcomed the ISAC (International Scientific Advisory Committee) members to the reception dinner at his residence located adjacent to the British Embassy in the occasion of the visit of the International Scientific Advisory Committee of NARIT. The dinner was part of the ISAC's mission to examine NARIT's progress over the past year and to facilitate the making of its future roadmap. 

“Ever since my visit to NARIT during the Inauguration of the Thai National Observatory (TNO) in 2012, I have been surprised and excited of how the bilateral ties between Thailand and the UK, especially in astronomy and astrophysics have been flourished in a very progressive manner. This has surpassed to the point where our partnership development has been deepened in various dimensions, in which human and capacity building, instrumentation studies together with optical and radio astronomy are attributed to.” profoundly remarked HE. Mr. Mark Kent. “This has set a new diplomatic approach where science diplomacy has a vital role to play in bringing the two nations together, closer than ever before” added the British Ambassador.

 

STEM Education was one the topics discussed over the dinner table. It was agreed that in lifting one’s competitiveness in the world arena, both parties must look at STEM Education with an in-depth strategic approach. “Astronomy is one of the most effective mechanisms on offer as a principle fit of the development from basic sciences to STEM Education in all phases of human beings which also can be attributed to lifelong education, built upon solid foundation of strong collaborations in astronomy of both countries.” said Prof. Boonrucksar Soonthornthum, NARIT Executive Director. 

 

In commemoration of the long-standing relationship in the field of science and technology, the British Embassy Bangkok is organizing an exhibition called “Thailand-UK Partnership in Science, Technology and Innovation 2016”, presided over by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on Feb 8, 2016 at the British Embassy Bangkok. NARIT will exhibit its work under the theme of “STEM Education through Astronomy” together with 6 other agencies and their counterparts from the UK.
