Today Prof. Boonrucksar Soonthornthum, NARIT Executive Director attends the 197th session of the Executive Board of UNESCO at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France. This year, Thailand sees an open door of vast opportunities as the proposal for the Establishment of Category 2 International Training Centre in Astronomy under the Auspices of UNESCO shall be endorsed and adopted by the 197th session of the Executive Board of UNESCO, making NARIT a truly international astronomical research organization that brings astronomy and its related sciences, relevant developments and capacity building in the global arena to a new height.

Once endorsed, the centre is poised to nurture the emerging and existing researchers from different backgrounds and cultures to gain an access to one of the most cutting-edge facilities and infrastructures currently on offer. Together with close supervision from NARIT's very own academics and technical personnel coupled with NARIT's globally recognized partners both through its current extensive international collaborations and via UNESCO, marking a great leap forward for astronomy development for the developing world.

The 197th session of the Executive Board of UNESCO convenes prior to the General Conference of UNESCO in late November of 2015. The justification of the endorsement of the International Training Centre in Astronomy (among other 21 category 2 institutes and centres proposals) by the Executive Board shall be heard in the next couple of days and officially declared in the General Conference of UNESCO later in November.
