Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Opens ROP, Nakhon Ratchasima

November 24, 2014

On 16 November 2014, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn graciously presided over the Inauguration Ceremony of the Regional Observatory for the Public, Nakhon Ratchasima in Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Her Royal Highness was welcomed by Prof. Boonrucksar Soonthornthum: Executive Director of NARIT, Dr. Saran Poshyachinda: Deputy Director of NARIT and other distinguished guests.

HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn honored this occasion with her presence of keen enthusiasm in the recently completed astronomy complex. HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s interest in astronomy has been felt by her subjects for decades and in 2009 saw the glorious leap forward of Thai astronomy as she took Thai National Observatory: TNO under her patronage as a project among several other Royal Initiatives.

The complex consists of a planetarium housing one of the most cutting edge fulldome projection systems available on the market. With its real time star locator with high resolution of up to 25 megapixels, the planetarium has promised to set a benchmark for the planetarium of its kind within the Thai territory. A 0.5 metre telescope with a clamshell dome is also one of the highlights of the complex as it aims to facilitate the needs of local research work and astronomy education far and wide in the Northeast of the nation. Furthermore, the dome is also packed with smaller size telescopes and other astronomical instruments for use of public outreach activities.

Regional Observatory for the Public, Nakhon Ratchasima opens daily (except Mondays) to the public from 8.30 – 16.30 hrs.
